Bells, Welcome, Announcements and Sharing

á Hymn                                                                          Light the Fire

I stand to praise You

But I fall to my knees

My spirit is hungry

But my flesh is so weak

Refrain:  So light the fire in my soul

Fan the flame make me whole

Oh Lord You know where I’ve been

So light the fire in my heart again

I feel Your arms around me

As the power of Your healing begins

You breathe new life right through me

Like a mighty rushing wind

á  Confession and Forgiveness

P Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever.

C  Amen.

P Let us come into the light of Christ, confessing our need for God’s mercy.

Silence is kept for reflection.

P Holy and faithful God,

C   we so often choose our own way instead of yours.

We think we can evade your commandments.

We have spoken in ways that kill,

strayed with our hearts,

betrayed friends, and hated enemies.

We have broken our promises.

Search us deeply and create us anew.

Lift the heavy burden of our sin

and free us to follow your way of life. Amen

P  “Call upon me,” says the Lord, “and I will answer.”

Our God has come among us to loose every bond

and set us free from all that weighs us down.

Receive the forgiveness of all your sins

in the name of ☩ Jesus Christ,

our crucified and risen Savior.

C    Amen.

Hymn                                                Lord I Lift Your Name On High

Lord I lift Your name on high

Lord I love to sing Your praises

I’m so glad You’re in my life

I’m so glad You came to save us

Refrain:  You came from heaven to earth

To show the way

From the earth to the cross

My debt to pay

From the cross to the grave

From the grave to the sky

Lord I lift Your name on high

Prayer of the Day

P Arise, shine; for your light has come. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C And also with you.

P Let us pray…

C O God, generous and supreme, your loving Son lived among us, instructing us in the ways of humility and justice. Continue to ease our burdens, and lead us to serve alongside of him, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

Responsive Reading                                                             Psalm 8

1     As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God.

2     My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

When shall I come and behold the face of God?

3     My tears have been my food day and night,

while people say to me continually, “Where is your God?”

4     These things I remember, as I pour out my soul:

how I went with the crowd, and led them in procession to the house of God,

with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving,

a multitude keeping festival.

5     Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help 6 and my God.

Gospel                                                                             John 4:5-42

L The Holy Gospel from John in the 4th Chapter

C Glory to you, O Lord

5 Jesus came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.

7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking to you.”

27 Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or, “Why are you speaking with her?” 28 Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, 29 “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?” 30 They left the city and were on their way to him.

31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. 36 The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

39 Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

C Praise to You O Christ

Sermon                                                                      Anne Kempffer

á  Hymn                                                                    Fill My Cup Lord

Like the woman at the well I was seeking

For things that could not satisfy

And then I heard my Savior speaking

Draw from my well that never shall run dry

Chorus  Fill my cup Lord I lift it up Lord

Come and quench this thirsting of my soul

Bread of heaven feed me till I want no more

Fill my cup fill it up and make me whole

There are millions in this world who are craving

The pleasures earthly things afford

But none can match the wondrous treasure

That I find in Jesus Christ my Lord        Chorus

So my brother if the things this world gave you

Leave hungers that won’t pass away

My blessed Lord will come and save you

If you kneel to Him and humbly pray     Chorus

WE RESPOND TO THE WORD OF GOD

Offering Prayer

P God of all creation,

C  All you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen

Camp Creed

We believe in God above us, maker and sustainer of all life, of sun and moon, of water and earth, of male and female.

We believe in God beside us, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, born of a woman’s womb, servant of the poor.  He was tortured and nailed to a tree.  A man of sorrows, he died forsaken.  He descended into the earth to the place of death.  On the third day he rose from the tomb.  He ascended into heaven to be everywhere present, and his kingdom will come on earth.

We believe in God within us, the Holy Spirit of Pentecostal fire, life-giving breath of the Church, spirit of healing and forgiveness, source of resurrection and of life everlasting.  Amen.

á Sending Hymn            Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)

Amazing grace how sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost but now I’m found

Was blind but now I see

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear

And grace my fears relieved

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed

Refrain:   My chains are gone I’ve been set free

My God my Savior has ransomed me

And like a flood His mercy rains

            Unending love amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me

His word my hope secures

He will my shield and portion be

As long as life endures     Refrain

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow

The sun forbear to shine

But God who called me here below

Will be forever mine

Will be forever mine

You are forever mine     Refrain
