About us

Bethlehem Lutheran Church is a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

The Director of Youth and Family coordinates our core programs of Sunday School and Confirmation, leads the High School Youth Group, and organizes other activities to help children and youth love and grow in the way of Jesus. The Director is supported by our team of Sunday School teachers, the Youth and Family Ministry Board, member volunteers, and our pastor. Bethlehem is a Pastoral sized church, with a long history of loving the children and youth God has put in our midst. We are located on the North Shore within sight of Lake Superior.

Director of Youth and Family Ministry Job Description

The Director of Youth and Family Ministry shall be employed by the congregation, accountable to and supervised by the executive council of the congregation, and directly responsible to the pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

The Director of Youth and Family Ministry shall maintain a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and courtesy required for work in this church.

The Director of Youth and Family Ministry shall encourage and support the mission, ministries, council, staff, and members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and the Northeastern Minnesota Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to which this congregation belongs.

The Director of Youth and Family Ministry shall be employed 20 hours per week, year round. The director of youth and family ministry shall receive three (21 days) weeks of paid vacation.

The Director of Youth and Family Ministry shall receive the further annual benefits of: $500.00 for approved continuing education; one week (20 hours) of paid continuing education time; up to $500.00 mileage reimbursement (no benefits may carry over from one year to the next).

In fulfillment of the objectives of this position, the director of youth and family ministry shall:

1. General

  • Keep regular office hours, be present for Sunday morning worship and fellowship, Sunday School, and Confirmation.
  • Attend the scheduled staff meetings, the monthly Youth, Family and Education Board meetings, and serve on the Scholarship Committee of the congregation.
  • Prepare a report for and, at the discretion of the congregation council, attend the monthly meeting of the congregation council, as well as prepare a report for and attend the annual meeting of the congregation.
  • Help plan and carry out special events, service projects, and group activities for the children and youth of all ages and their families of the congregation (Rally Sunday, Christmas Pageant, Retreats, Synod Journey/ National Youth Gathering, Cardia Deo, etc.).
  • Administer, with the pastor and the congregational president, the Safe Church policy of the congregation.
  • Keep in regular contact (telephone, email, social media, face-to-face, etc.) with the children, youth, and parents of Bethlehem.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the pastor, other member of the staff, or a member of the executive council of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

2. Sunday School (Pre-K – 6th grade)

  • Work with the pastor and members of the Youth, Family, and Education Board to provide a Sunday School program that teaches and promotes the Lutheran faith and traditions. Help recruiting and registering students, recruiting and training teachers and other volunteers, and recording attendance.
  • Work with the pastor and members of the Youth, Family, and Education Board to provide an annual Vacation Bible School that teaches and promotes the Lutheran faith and traditions. Help recruiting and registering students, recruiting and training teachers and other volunteers, and recording attendance.

3. Confirmation (7th – 9th grades)

  • Work with the pastor and members of the Youth, Family, and Education Board to provide a Confirmation program that teaches and promotes the Lutheran faith and traditions. Help recruiting and registering students, recruiting and training guides and other volunteers, and recording attendance.

4. Youth Group (9th grade + )

  • Work with the pastor and members of the Youth, Family, and Education Board to provide a congregational youth group that teaches and promotes the Lutheran faith and traditions. Help recruiting and registering students, recruiting and training guides and other volunteers, and recording attendance.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $12.00 – $20.00 per hour

  • Recruit and equip children and youth to participate in worship as readers, musicians, singers, acolytes, etc.
  • Advertise all youth and family ministry classes, activities, events and needs in the bulletins, newsletters, social media and website.
  • Maintain the informational kiosks and bulletin boards with up-to-date parish youth events.
  • Administer, with the pastor and the congregational president, the Safe Church policy of the congregation.
  • Administer the funds dedicated to Children Youth and Family Ministries.
  • Keep in regular contact (telephone, email, social media, face-to-face, etc.) with the children, youth, and parents of Bethlehem.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the pastor, other member of the staff, or a member of the executive council of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

  • Coordinate the photographs, flowers, fellowship, etc. for the rite of Confirmation.
  • Attend and help recruit and register students for the Synod’s annual middle school youth gathering. Help recruit parents and volunteers to provide transportation for and to supervise also.

4 Youth Group (9th grade + )

  • Work with the pastor and members of the Youth, Family, and Education Board to provide a congregational youth group that teaches and promotes the Lutheran faith and traditions. Help recruiting and registering students, recruiting and training guides and other volunteers, and recording attendance.
